What is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy (also known as visual training) is an individualized, supervised treatment program designed to correct visual-motor and/or perceptual-cognitive deficiencies caused by factors such as:

  • Inadequate sensorimotor development.
  • Trauma to the nervous system (e.g., birth injury, brain trauma, closed head trauma, etc.).
  • Stress or, in some cases, hereditary factors (e.g., crossed-eyes, wandering eyes).

Vision therapy focuses on training the visual system, which includes the eyes, brain, and body. It is a form of neurological training or rehabilitation similar to occupational or physical therapy.

The goal is to train the brain to use the eyes effectively, comprehend information quickly, and react appropriately. Therapy involves enhancing brain control over:

  • Eye alignment.
  • Eye movements.
  • Focusing abilities.
  • Binocular vision (eye teamwork).

Specialized tools like therapeutic lenses, prisms, and filters are used to develop visual-motor skills and endurance. Newly acquired skills are reinforced through repetition and integration with motor and cognitive abilities.
